Masorti/Mercaz Australasia has held its first Annual General Meeting and elected office holders in Sydney and Melbourne.
The decision to change the name to Masorti/Mercaz Australasia enables the one organisation to represent the religious and zionist aspects of the movement and is open to the development of links with New Zealand, in response to expressions of interest from that country.
In time, it is hoped that new Masorti minyanim will develop in NZ and in other cities in Australia.
This is a small but significant step in building stronger connections between the Melbourne and Sydney congregations and developing closer links with Masorti Olami, the world Masorti movement. It consolidates on the recent first ever participation by Australian representatives in the Masorti/Mercaz Olami delegation to the World Zionist Congress.
Over time, this organisational expression of the Australasian Masorti movement will also assist by providing spokespeople in each city, who will be able to communicate a more clearly articulated Masorti view on matters of importance to the broader Jewish community.
The Gen08 survey of the Australian Jewish community clearly indicates a strong potential for Masorti to grow by appealing to the majority of Australian Jews who regard themselves as traditional, but live a Jewish life in dynamic tension with modernity.
Our purpose is to project a clear and well understood Masorti alternative.
