Rotem bill postponed

After a deluge of opposition, particularly from Masorti and Reform Jews in the diaspora, presentation of the Rotem conversion bill to the Knesset has been postponed.

This is a tribute to the work of  Masorti and Reform lobby organisations in Israel as well as the cooperative efforts of Jews around the world.  It has been reported that PM Netanyahu received an unprecedented 50,000 emails and letters protesting the divisive nature of the Bill, which still threatens to further entrench the Israel's discriminatory laws.

The fight is not over, but the first battle has been won.  Israel is still the only advanced democracy in the world where Jews do not enjoy freedom of religious conscience.

Masorti and Reform movements protest Rotem Bill

Against a background of broken promises and false reassurances, the Rotem Bill is being pushed closer to approval by the Knesset.

This Bill would, if passed, further entrench ultra-Orthodox control of conversion processes in Israel and reverse the status quo - which recognises non Orthodox conversions carried out in the diaspora.

It is vital that Jews in Israel and the diaspora speak out in a clear voice, demanding that this divisive Bill be rejected.  At a time when Israel needs the support of Jews throughout the diaspora - the overwhelming majority of whom are not Orthodox - the Rotem Bill is a foolish and unwarranted provocation.
