Masorti Australasia
Mercaz Australasia is the Australasian chapter of Mercaz Olami, the international zionist organisation of the Masorti/Conservative movement.
In 2010, for the very first time, Mercaz Australasia participated in the Mercaz Olami/Masorti Olami delegation to the 36th World Zionist Congress in Jerusalem. This was an important opportunity to play our part in working for a religiously pluralist, democratic Israel. It was also an important opportunity to meet with a variety of Masorti activists from around the world, including west and eastern Europe, the UK, the USA, Canada, South America and India.
From its earliest days, the Masorti movement and its leaders were committed Zionists - sometimes in the face of hostility from other Jewish leaders of the time.
Masorti Jews in Australia are strong supporters of Israel and participate in the range of communal activities to support the Jewish state.
The Masorti movement's ongoing involvement includes building a network of Masorti congregations and institutions in Israel, while actively supporting religious pluralism and efforts to overcome to the religious monopoly of the Orthodox authorities.
It is simply unacceptable that Israel is the only advanced democracy in the world where Jews do not have individual freedom of religious practice.
Mercaz-Masorti Australasia Inc is the vehicle for Masorti Jews in Australia and New Zealand to make their voice heard in the Zionist movement and in Israel.
From a small beginning, Mercaz Australasia will establish strong connections with the international movement and grow together with other Zionist organisations in Australia and New Zealand.
